What Wondrous Love Is This

gabrielle June 1st, 2007

Getting a handle on this elusive creature called the false self is a tricky business.  So, while putting together some posts for next week, I’ll leave you in the capable hands of a few people who know a thing or two about love.  Six minutes and twenty-seven seconds is too long, you say?  Well, some of us in a certain combox might not think so; in fact, we’d probably spend our lives hanging around these folks, in a heartbeat.

[Edited to answer Brother Freddie's question in the combox here]:  The YouTube was done in Ireland, but the hymn is actually American, circa 1835.  You can find the lyrics right here!

“In half a heartbeat, even,” she cried in her best Snagglepuss voice. Oh, heavens to murgatroyd, wherever did you find this clip of heaven? Somehow, they’ve unearthed me father as a young man to play the guitar, there.. (And I’ll bet these people, too, forget to eat.)

What wondrous love is this that feeds us deeply, so often?

  2. kathrynthereseon 01 Jun 2007 at 6:51 pm

    uh huh.
6 minutes isn’t nearly enough. I can smell the salt air….

  3. kathrynthereseon 01 Jun 2007 at 6:54 pm

You could take your first bodhran lesson from that fine young fella, gypsy ;)

  4. kathrynthereseon 01 Jun 2007 at 6:57 pm

And, btw, our porch jams don’t sound quite like this, but we do have 2 guitars, 2 fiddles, a cello, and a bunch of kids singing. Some day, we’ll be YouTube worthy!

  5. gabrielleon 02 Jun 2007 at 12:57 am

Oh, do one soon, kt, before the kids all get teenage angst and refuse to be on camera! Natural is better anyway, not all rehearsed!

Gypsy, I found this one quite a while ago, and was saving it for a rainy day. I’ve listened to it many times; just love it.

Speaking of Youtubes, could any of us please get a few decent Catholic contemplative series going? The lack is deplorable. You busy, gypsy-girl?

  7. Annon 02 Jun 2007 at 5:36 am

I love the spontaneity when musicians get together….their love of music lifts the soul. You knew what you were doing, Gabrielle, keeping it for a rainy day. And the fact that it was recorded on a cliff top by the sea adds so much to it…though maybe we’ll not demand that of KT’s family…not yet anyway.,,the porch is fine.

And YES to a Catholic Contemplative Series…just one line from any of them is often food for a week. YES YES YES…please.

  8. gypsyon 02 Jun 2007 at 8:22 am

Hmm.. there’s a potential Catholic contemplation in anything we behold, hear, smell, taste.. Did you mean only YouTubes? But mine’d all be of John Paul II or of little blond “krittybean” singing Ave Maria or Hallelujah, or the Evolution of Dance, or Eva Cassidy.

Hey, girl, you RULE at finding musable YouTubes.

It’d be easier to start with any of these quotes which a very holily contemplative lady sent along once.

  9. gypsyon 02 Jun 2007 at 9:48 am

Kathryn, sounds like a bodhran would fit right in ;-)

How wonderful for families to make music together. I tried to get that going here.. well, ONE of us can play Silent Night on the mastodon piano, one of us dropped the flute when the music teacher said with frustration, “You’ve no talent for this,” to a 4th grader, and the next one excelled in clarinet but then laid it down in favor of horses. *sigh..

  10. gabrielleon 02 Jun 2007 at 5:12 pm

But gypsy, I didn’t mean “find” them; I meant “make” them. :) For instance, type in Thomas Merton and see what you “don’t” come up with. Or contemplative prayer. Or Lectio Divina. It’s really sad.   We could start making some thoughtful, contemplative pieces and upload them to Youtube.

  11. gabrielleon 02 Jun 2007 at 5:17 pm

Ann, yes, the porch is just fine! In Canada, some of our best music comes out of Newfoundland kitchen parties! (And Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, of course!)

  12. gypsyon 02 Jun 2007 at 7:07 pm

I guess I am more serious than this rubber chicken and ow-ooga horn would lead one to believe. I made a page over at gypsy’s place for contemplative folks wondering about certain things..

Good gravy, I haven’t even smelled a bodhran yet, and we’re uploading Merton pieces? Let’s organize this.. uh, considering we stretch from Ireland to Italy to Canada and the U.S. and Norway and Germany and…………….

but, um, tell me more. :-)

  13. gabrielleon 02 Jun 2007 at 8:00 pm

Well, I’m just throwing this out as an idea, but let’s say we each took one contemplative, and did ourselves up a plan, and over the course of the next year created ten Youtubes each and uploaded them. For instance, kt could take Teresa of Avila, teresa_anawim could take Elizabeth of the Trinity, you could take Therese de Lisieux, Paula could take St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross, Owen could take Josemaria Escriva, Judy (who belongs to the Order of Julian of Norwich) could take Julian, Penni could take Merton, Antony could take Nouwen, fmn could take St. Gemma Galgani, and on and on. I know I’m forgetting people here, old bloggy friends and new, like Ann and Aeternus, but you see what I mean.  Or someone might prefer to concentrate on a specific topic, like Lectio Divina.  We’ve often said we’ve been gathered here for a reason, and apart from prayer and supporting each other in many, many ways, perhaps it’s time for us to move forward as a group, and try to share whatever the Lord has allowed us to understand, and make some things more accessible to others who are searching.  Not that Youtube is the finest of art forms, but millions of people watch these videos everyday, and the contemplative message should be there.

I can’t play a thing but my mp3 and presently I don’t have the technology to film anything. Loved this youtube though. Not sure what I would do if I could. My own sort of icons come to mind, the kind that purists would likely not consider icons at all. Not even sure what I would do…maybe film me drawing something in an time lapse form? or for real contemplative pain I could just upload the thing in real time :)…well, as I say, that’s only if I was to have the technology and know how to use it. I am honestly open to giving this some thought though…which is what contemplatives do :-)

  15. gypsyon 02 Jun 2007 at 10:15 pm

I don’t play at being stupid, I really AM! But I catch on fast, so
…how does one make a YouTube, and how does one upload one?

  16. Annon 03 Jun 2007 at 5:09 am

I loved the YOuTube but have no technical skills. I am happy to have the role of support for all the YouTubers -to - be through prayer and comment boxes.
It is a great idea, Gabrielle. The Holy Spirit will I’m sure be there as always, among us and in us.
Isn’t the universality of the church so wonderful, so unifying.

  17. gypsyon 03 Jun 2007 at 9:45 am

Yes, Ann, me, too. I was about to say, “Let me be just part of the prayer section for it,” but we’ll see. Unifying, yes.
    :-)

  18. Annon 03 Jun 2007 at 11:11 am

Yes, Gypsy, we’ll see…..your YouTube…with maybe even a bodhran in hand? God is good.

  19. gypsyon 03 Jun 2007 at 1:15 pm

God is indeed good, and even with pipes, such as this could hardly be beaten, yes?

  20. Swede1875on 03 Jun 2007 at 7:36 pm

    Sweet! :-)

  21. gypsyon 03 Jun 2007 at 9:53 pm

Um. Let me try this again..

  22. gabrielleon 04 Jun 2007 at 1:27 am

Oh, that was magnificent, gypsy! (The boys’ choir, not your html!!!)

Well now, I don’t know how to go about it myself, actually, and we don’t have a video camera either, at least, not at the moment! But I know the simple Youtubes can be made on Windows Movie Maker, which most of us have if we have one of the more recent versions of Windows on our computers. I will ask teenager to help me. Teenager knows just about everything.  :)   And then I will tell you.  So we will all know just about everything.  As it should be.

  23. Annon 04 Jun 2007 at 7:20 am

    An angelic sound, Gypsy.
And Gabrielle, by coincidence I asked my teenage son about YouTube and he showed me how to access the site and said there were thousands and thousands of different video clips. As I said before I’m happy to leave YouTube to others, and look forward to hearing the voices and seeing the faces of at least some of your virtual friends.

  24. fmnon 04 Jun 2007 at 12:39 pm

    Only one word: WOW.

gotta go back and watch it again.

    ciao!

  25. [...] Gypsy and Gabrielle have been talking about the beauty of music lately. I found something lovely that I want to share, too. Enjoy. [...]

fmn, what a lovely find you made! It’s one I’ve never heard before. Beautiful!

  27. freddieon 07 Jun 2007 at 4:43 pm

fantastic, I’ve always loved this kind of music; is it Irish?
thanks for sharing it and for all your words!
    Bless you

br. Freddie, I’ve edited the post a little on the bottom to answer your question, and so everyone could see the answer and the link with the lyrics. Thanks for popping in to visit!

  29. fmnon 10 Jun 2007 at 11:40 am

Thank you so much for linking to the lyrics, Gab. It’s a truly moving hymn and so much better than hymns of today!

  30. Gabrielleon 10 Jun 2007 at 12:18 pm

Thanks, fmn; yes, I should have done that in the first place! I had a little difficulty understanding some of the words myself!
